Brainerd Minnesota Lakes area is a regional shopping, industrial, and tourism center. There are many nearby resorts that take advantage of the many nearby lakes including Gull Lake. The Mississippi River flows right through Brainerd with five road/highway bridges and one railroad bridge crossing it. There is also the Paul Bunyan Trail, a bowling alley in Brainerd, Movie theater in Baxter, Amusement Parks in area. Brainerd is also home to one of the Central Lakes College campuses. Construction of a six-mile paved trail segment connecting the Paul Bunyan State Trail to Crow Wing State Park in Brainerd is now complete and open to the public, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Parks and Trails Division.

by Charlie Zelle, Commissioner, Minnesota Department of Transportation June 13, 2014. June is Rail Crossing Safety Awareness Month. It serves to remind us that risky behavior near railroad tracks can be a matter of life and death. Already this year, there have been 25 highway-rail grade collisions in Minnesota. In February, drivers in Elk River went around lowered gates at two different crossings and their vehicles were hit by trains. Fortunately, only property was damaged.
